School SLP 101

School SLP 101 is an online course for speech-language pathologists transitioning to a school setting. One of the best things about being an SLP is the flexibility to work in a variety of environments.  You can choose from clinic, SNF, hospital, early intervention or school.   If you're switching to a school-based SLP job from another position you'll be faced with IEPs,  Common Core, teacher collaboration, group therapy, and scheduling in ways that you've never experienced. This course will help you navigate those situations through easy-to-watch video modules.

-> 70+ Short videos to help you transition to a school position.

-> Instant downloads of forms, lesson plans, and treatment ideas.

-> 3 CMH hours certificate.

A Video Course Just for School SLPs

This course was developed to support SLPs transitioning to school-based positions. The fundamentals of clinical practice remain the same across different settings. The paperwork, service delivery and the team approach are very different. This course will refresh your knowledge of all parts of being a school speech-language pathologist.

The course includes:

  • 70+ short videos that deliver content in bite-sized increments so that you can find what you need quickly.
  • Instant downloads of forms, data sheets, and other time savers.
  • Step-by-step review of the IEP process and sample IEPs from different age groups.
  • Mock IEP meetings to watch how Jenna holds a meeting with parents.
  • Certificate of Attendance  upon completion to document 3 CMHs.  (Learn the specifics of the certificate of completion in the FAQ.)

What You'll Learn

Course content covers the following topics: What's Different in the Schools, IEPs and Evaluations, Start of the Year Routines and Forms, Organization, Collaboration, Ethics, Lesson Plans, Response to Intervention, Treatment Techniques (group therapy), Materials & Resources, and Ways to Thrive.

Mastering Paperwork

How will you complete the school paperwork? That's the biggest concern before you switch to a school job.  During the course, you'll walk through how to write an IEP and then hold the meeting.  Learn the different ways to utilize the Response to Intervention process and  decide if universal screenings are right for you.

Group Treatment

Treating students in groups can be a big change if you're starting in a school-based position. The course will teach you how to choose activities that work for mixed groups, how to do therapy with that many students, and what to do about data collection.

What shouldn't I do?

A school SLP is bound by different rules and expectations than a clinical SLP. There are different rules for qualifying students, making referrals, and writing year-long goals. The course has modules telling you exactly what NOT to do so you don't end up in trouble your first week.

Bonus Group

As a bonus, gain entrance to the members-only Facebook Group. Small Groups are a great way to collaborate with other people with your same experiences. Switching to the school creates unique challenges, and the group will provide an opportunity to collaborate and problem solve together.

What People Are Saying:

"I wanted to start by thanking you for sharing this resource, as I'm sure it will prove to be invaluable as I enter into a novel setting. As an SLP who has taken graduate level coursework specific to working in the school setting, completed my CF, and worked in multiple different settings, I still feel as though I am unprepared and unsure in the days leading up to my transition from into the schools. When I listen to the terminology and experiences from other SLPs in the school setting, I sometimes feel as if I am entering an entirely different profession. Having this resource available to help ease my transition has helped to calm me, as well as answer questions I had (e.g. "Who's my boss?"), as well as answer questions I didn't even know to ask! (e.g. flexible scheduling). I loved how topics are broken up into manageable 2-10 minute videos, which makes this course easy to fit into my current schedule. I also like that I can watch and re-watch the videos that are most applicable to me, and the downloadable resources that accompany some of the topics. I will definitely be using the introductory letter template this year!" - Jodi R.

"I love how it's broken up into sections so you can easily look back and find something specific at a later date if you have questions or have forgotten and need to double- check. The downloads and resources you provided will definitely be super helpful and I like that you put resources from other professionals in there as well." - Karly F.

"I want to thank you for virtually holding my hand through several things I encountered or needed clarification about. This course was a life saver for me! Year one is over and I am going to be (more) ready/prepared for next year, woohoo! I will be forever in your debt for giving me the confidence boost I needed to "just get out there and do it" after worrying for years whether I had the guts to take the plunge into the schools after being in the medical setting for so long."
